Personal statement

I am the research assistant on the British Academy (BA) funded project Doing Disability Futures (Knowledge Frontiers: International Interdisciplinary Research). The project uses speculative and arts-based methods to address histories of colonial violence and ongoing injustices while storytelling alternative futures, disrupting existing knowledges, and challenging power hierarchies. More broadly, my own research is situated at the intersection of mad/neurodivergent epistemologies, new materialist and affect theory, cultural studies, queer/feminist theory, and the medical humanities. My work explores mad/neuroqueer ways of thinking, feeling, and knowing through close engagement with cultural texts. I am particularly interested in theorising the possibilities of ambivalence and the unknowable for helping us understand and value multiplicitous, indeterminate experiences and identities. I am currently preparing a monograph with Routledge, which takes a neuroqueer and new materialist approach to the contested psychological concept of the borderline. I am also developing my next project, which will investigate how the boundary between the real and the unreal is policed in historical and contemporary psy-discourses, through close analysis of film and TV texts that unsettle this binary distinction. I am co-founder (with Dr Veronica Heney) of the Mad Feeling Collective, an interdisciplinary research collective which brings lived experience and affect-led approaches to explorations of madness on TV.
